BARRY residents will have a new space for events and games in the heart of the town.
Work is being done on Central Park following a consultation early last year, and when completed, it will see facilities capable of holding more events, and an area to play outdoor board games.
The work began on March 1 and is being funded by the Welsh Government.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for regeneration and education, said: “The work taking place should make Central Park an even more attractive place to visit.
“A paved area capable of staging events is being created, picnic tables with game tops added to the play area and a table for playing chess installed.
“The work should last for another couple of weeks.
“This is the latest example of widespread improvements that have been made to parks and play areas in the Vale over recent years. The play area in Central Park is also due for an upgrade in the coming months.”

Cllr Ian Johnson who represents the area, said: “The consultation for Central Park improvements took place at the start of last year, just before the pandemic began.
“At that time, we couldn’t have foreseen that there would be an even greater and more appropriate need for outdoor events spaces where people would socially distance or meet outside.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase events and local talent in the centre of Barry, in an accessible location which can bring people together that can be used in future, as we slowly come out of the coronavirus period.
“Improving the event space in Central Park will bring people to the centre of town, increasing numbers of people on Holton Road and helping to make the town centre more successful.
“However, it must also be remembered that this is in the centre of a residential area, so I don’t want to see late night or especially loud events.”
