THE VALE of Glamorgan is the area that is most expensive for couples to buy houses according to new research.

Online Mortgage Advisor has seen that the Vale has seen the biggest growth in prices in comparison to the rest of the Welsh local authorities.

The increase between 2011 and 2020 was 1.51, compared to Cardiff who came in second at 1.19.

They looked at available properties in each area on Zoopla and looked at the prices and mortgage prices as well as the average salary for each area.

Doing this, they found that couples in the Vale were able to afford the least amount of homes in the area – at 58.1 per cent of available properties, compared to Blaenau Gwent which had the most affordable properties at 96.7 per cent of properties being affordable for a couple.

The Vale came in at the fourth least affordable place to live for single buyers with only 17.6 per cent of properties being affordable to a single buyer.

Online Mortgage Advisor conducted the research using the formula "Mortgage (4.5x salary) + 15% deposit = Max price of property affordable"
