PUPILS from St Richard Gwyn Catholic High in Barry discovered their GCSE grades in what has been an unprecedented year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Head teacher, David Blackwell congratulated pupils and staff and which leavers good luck in their futures.

The results were based on teachers' assessments.

Mr Blackwell said: "We are delighted to see our students picking up their results today (August 20) after such turbulent times for them in the last few months of their Secondary school experience.

"We are so proud of the results they have achieved, they have worked exceptionally hard over the past five years to gain the outcomes they deserve today."

"The uncertainty of the last few months has caused lots of anxiety for them but I am delighted that the decision was made to allow the professionalism of our excellent staff to be considered a major determining factor in the awarding of grades," he said. "Our record school results reflect the excellent progress the school has made with learners of every ability level over the last five years.

"We continued our trend of improving on all the main key performance indicators, this shows the dedication of our fantastic staff and the commitment of our young people to strive to achieve the best they can in all that they do."

He added: "Some outstanding individual results of note that deserve special mention are, Joseph Chapple with an amazing 13 A*grades. Olivia Barnett, Aimee Curtis and Isabelle Bradley all getting 12 A*and one A grade each.

"Megan Crossman with nine A*, 3 A and one B grade. Sinead Murphy with nine A* and 4 A grades.

"Amy Crossman 10 A*, two A and one B grade. Charlie Feehan 13A* and two A grades. Stephanie Jones 10 A* and three A grades and Joseph Richmond nine A*, three A and one B grade.

"The class of 2020 will always be unique and as a school we are so proud of the way they have handled themselves in these extraordinary times, I am confident that the fair reflection of results they leave us with today along with the values we have tried to instil in them will stand them in good stead to thrive in the next chapter of their lives, we wish them all the success in the world, good luck."
