THE possible redevelopment of the Royal Hotel, as reported in the Barry and District News (Businesses Voice Fears, October 13), must be a real worry for local shop owners.
I understand that competition is not a planning consideration, and I wonder whether it is an error to describe these premises as retail without referring to their obvious previous use as a hotel.
When considering planning requests, planning advice or demolition proposals, council officials will need to take into consideration their Supplementary Planning Guidance relating to Barry. Particularly the section of that guidance about Cadoxton which says to "Retain and enhance landmark buildings and gateway sites".
In the meantime, this splendid building has been left to deteriorate, and the Vale of Glamorgan Council should consider using its powers of enforcement to prevent further dilapidation.
The building has merit, it is well worth preserving, and local people deserve their environment to be safe and presentable. This landmark and gateway building requires some urgent attention and protection.
