Barry struggle

DOWLAIS 27 BARRY 5 AFTER tackling division champions Bedlinog the previous week, events didn't get any easier with the away trip to Dowlais (Merthyr) next.

Another decimated squad saw ten of the 19 places occupied by the second team players and half of the regular first teamers having to play out of position.

Barry had to face into the extremely strong wind blowing off the local 'Top' to start.

Despite being under enormous pressure in the opening period, Barry took the lead in the 17th minute, after falling behind to an early drop goal.

Playing the correct tactic of keeping the ball in hand, the score came from a 5m scrum out wide.

Lewis Williams, this week at number eight, picked up quick ball from the base and rolling out of a tackle, off-loaded to supporting dynamic scrum half John Dimond who dived into the try zone.

Within ten minutes though, Dowlais regained the initiative with a breakaway try to start, closely followed by a converted penalty try, and for Barry the loss of a forward to the sin bin.

The team rallied and for the closing period of the first half had Dowlais camped on their own try line.

Despite valiant efforts by the forwards and one great opportunity in particular, Barry failed to get back within one score by the interval. Stalemate ensued until the hour mark when a penalty and another break-away try within five minutes saw the game out of reach for the visitors.

Tremendous credit to all players for their effort and commitment, in particular young brothers Danny and Rob Williams in the second row and back row respectively. 'Veteran' hooker Chris Prosser battled well with props Hollister and Ashley Brown against juggernaut opponents.

Leading his forwards, 'Bedlinog bruised' pack leader Martin Tanner added to his collection, while flanker James Hadfield covered acres of ground in pursuit of the ball.

Captain Chris Cummings led his centres Barry Booker and Jason Evans in defence while Geraint Manning from full back position marshalled wingers Adam Lee and Dave Williams.

Substitutes A Betts, G McGuiness and C McKiver of the Second XV also played their part and got onto play.

There is an away fixture at Aberdare this Easter Saturday before the final game of the season on Saturday, April 14, at home to Taffs Well.

* For those hoping to go to the scheduled Memorial Hall Ball on Friday, April 27, unfortunately it has been cancelled.
