Gallant effort
BARRY 1ST XV 0
BEDLINOG 33
THE FIXTURE between Barry 1st XV and Bedlinog last November saw the teams score three points each, on such a bog of a pitch that it really should have been deemed unplayable.
For the return, conditions were near perfect, both pitch and weatherwise.
Although it ended with two 3s in the scoreline, unfortunately they were both for Bedlinog, who clinched the league championship with the victory and underlined in the process why they have remained unbeaten this season.
Despite Barry being unable to field anything close to a full-strength squad, due to either illness, injuries or absences, the players and subs involved put up a gallant performance against formidable opponents.
Veteran second row Lyndon James came out of retirement to help in the pack and win valuable lineout ball, along with John Campbell.
Flankers Andy Morgan and Martin Tanner put their bodies in the 'danger zones' along with number eight Jason Evans on his early return from injury.
Combined with the front row of Haskell, Williams and Hollister, the forwards were immense in denying the visitors quality ball to use for long periods of the game.
The defensive midfield tackles of centres Owain Brown and Marvin Cordle, along with outside half and captain for the day Chris Cummings, continuously hassled and harried the Bedlinog three-quarters into making errors.
Even the sound defence of full-back Geraint Manning and wingers Adam Lee and David Williams couldn't prevent the brace of tries in each half for the visitors.
Great credit to the Second XV members, who played and were subs as without their efforts in being there, the match could not have been played.
This Saturday the 1st XV travel to Dowlais with the final home game of the season on Easter Saturday, April 7, against Taffs Well.
