Barry fail to get off the bus as Abercwmboi grab the spoils.......
ABERCWMBOI 33
BARRY 7
COMPARED with the previous week, the conditions at Abercwmboi were almost spring-like, and with fairly good ground underfoot the Barry supporters anticipated an afternoon of good rugby.
Unfortunately the Barry team failed to get off the bus, and the entire first half was completely dominated by the home side.
With a strong opposition, some disputed offside decisions and their normally reliable lineout failing to work, Barry found themselves living off scraps of possession.
Abercwmboi, on the other hand, benefited from a surfeit of ball, and aided by Barry's penchant for giving away penalties, dominated the scoreboard.
Four successful penalty kicks put them in the lead, followed by an unconverted try and a drop goal which had Barry reeling with a 20- point deficit on the half- hour.
When Barry did attempt to attack the home side's line and were at last causing problems, an interception in the Abercwmboi 22 resulted in a converted try and a further 7 points added to their score.
Another long-range drop goal immediately before the interval provided a 30-point deficit, and a mountain to climb if Barry were to get back into the game.
A rousing half-time 'chat' by the Barry coaches saw a different side enter the arena, and despite a strong wind that had helped the home team subsiding to nothing more than a zephyr, Barry deservedly won a hotly contested 40 minutes.
Number 8 Jason Evans, after benefiting from a quick tap penalty by John Dimond, crashed over for a try which Chris Cummings converted.
Although Abercwmboi increased their score with another penalty, again awarded for an offence at the tackle area, Barry's second- half display deserved more reward, but with the home outfit resorting to 'streetwise' tactics, any threat was soon nullified and Abercwmboi ran out deserved winners by 33-7.
A high point of the game was the return of sprightly and always inspirational fly- half Rhidian Scott, who was watched from the touchline by wife Helen and his three- month-old twin boys, Owen and Rhys.
This Saturday Barry entertain Cowbridge, while the 2nd XV travel to Old Penarthians, both kick-offs at 2.30pm.
